NY SPORTS BETTING LAUNCH?
While NY state legislators may not have reached a verdict on passing a sports betting bill that would have also included mobile wagering, the state of New York may still have a chance at making such wagers. “Commission staff continues to work on regulations that would effectuate sports gambling under existing statutory language,” Ochrym said at the commission’s monthly meeting, adding that the one issue being reviewed is whether “existing law can be read so as to authorize mobile wagering without new statutory enactments.”
Assembly Racing and Wagering Committee Chairman Gary Pretlow, who brought the online sports gambling legislation to the forefront, said he believes the Gaming Commission had the ability to authorize online gambling. “The Gaming Commission has the authority to interpret the laws as they see fit,” said Pretlow.
NY CASINOS READY FOR SPORTS BETS
Back in 2013, a bill was passed that allowed the four “Vegas-like” casinos in New York to allow sports betting. These casinos are the del Lago Resort and Casino, Rivers Casino and Resort, Tioga Downs Casino and Resort World Catskills located in Waterloo, Nichols, Schenectady and Monticello. However, that law states that “an operator shall accept wagers on sports events only from persons physically present in the sports wagering lounge.”
“There’s no question it will drive revenue and visitation to our casino here,” said Charlie Degliomini of Resorts World Catskills. Degliomini said the casino was already “pre-wired” in case PASPA was struck down. “I think we’re more excited than anxious, but we know it’s something that’s going to happen, it’s just a question of when,” said Degliomini. “For us, sooner is better than later.”
By next year, the plan is to expand sports betting to slots-only casinos such as Empire City in Yonkers, Jake’s 58 in Suffolk County and Resorts World in Queens. This September, regulations are expected to come down by the New York State Gaming Commission to issue regulations allowing New York’s first four sportsbooks to open.
Authorizing sports gambling in the state of New York, like any state would be a monstrous increase to state revenue. Regardless of whether mobile wagering is allowed yet, it sounds like it will be in time. For now, brick and mortar establishments will carry out the wagers.
With September comes the football season—a huge coup for the sports gambling landscape. New York is already a massive tourist attraction, and with the legalization of sports betting, it will make it even more so. According to Glenn Blain of the New York Daily News, Ochrym said the commission staff planned to meet with “stakeholders in the industry to discuss the matter but did not offer a timetable on when the new regulations would be completed and released for public review.”
